Our mission has always been simple: create honest, nourishing skincare using thoughtfully sourced ingredients and time-honored methods. We believe that quality skincare starts with quality ingredients, and that's why we're committed to being involved in every step of the process-from sourcing our beef suet to hand crafting the finished product that arrives at your doorstep. 

It Starts with Trusted Sources  

Every batch begins with carefully selected beef suet sourced from my husband's family and trusted local farms. Building relationships with local farmers allows us to know where our ingredients come from and gives us confidence in the foundation of every product we make. 

Supporting local agriculture and sourcing close to home whenever possible are values that have been part of Velvet Cow from the very beginning. Knowing where your skincare starts is just as important to us as knowing what goes into it. 

Our Traditional Rendering Process 

Once the fresh beef suet arrives, the real work begins. 

We render every batch ourselves using a traditional wet-rendering method. The suet is slowly simmered with purified water and a small amount of salt. This gentle process helps separate the pure tallow from connective tissue and other impurities while avoiding excessive heat. 

After the first rendering, the tallow is carefully strained.  But we don't stop there. 

our tallow is rendered several more times, with each rendering helping remove additional impurities and moisture. This patient process results in a beautifully clean, creamy tallow that becomes the heart of nearly every Velvet Cow product. 

While it takes more time, we believe careful craftsmanship is always worth the effort. 

Why Removing Moisture Matter

One of the most important parts of our rendering process is ensuring the finished tallow is as free of moisture as possible.

Water and oil don't mix, and any remaining can shorten shelf life, affect the consistency of the tallow, and create an environment where mold or unwanted microbial growth can occur. By carefully rendering and purifying our tallow multiple times, we remove as much moisture as possible before it becomes part of our skincare. This attention to detail helps us create a clean, stable ingredient without relying on unnecessary fillers, allowing the quality of the tallow to shine.
